Strictly Cycling Collective is the premier destination for those looking to be a part of the New York City biking community. For over 25 years, the Gutierrez family in Fort Lee, NJ have been operating Strictly Bicycles, providing customers with the highest quality of service and cycling gear. Looking to expand their passion for the sport, they decided to open a location in the Hudson Yards neighborhood within close vicinity to the Highline. Aiming to create a unique retail and social experience that emphasizes their values of diversity and inclusivity, the Client enlisted TPG Architecture to create a home base for the collective.

When approaching the design for the space, the team wanted to create a forward-thinking, high-tech experience that reinforces the connection to the adjacent Highline and Industrial past of Hudson Yards. The retail component of the shop brings together three of the world’s top cycling brands: Specialized, ASSOS of Switzerland, and Pinarello. Our team worked with the individual brands to create their zones for displaying their merchandise while staying true to the overall look and feel. Custom wood seating elements inspired by the Highline and graffiti art installations bring the New York City grit to the space. For those looking to discover their perfect bike set up, the shop offers the Retül Bike Fit, 3-D motion capture technology providing riders with data about their physique, which helps support their choices of cycling equipment to obtain that personal riding experience.

Throughout the design process, the Client emphasized the desire for this space to support the cycling community. As such, we created a designated coffee, wine and craft beer bar area for those to connect and relax. Monitors display annual races such as the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France that guests can bond over. Additionally, a topographic map of the area on the wall highlights local bike trails riders can explore.
