Reshaping urban landscapes for Rockefeller Group’s Plaza at 1221 Avenue of the Americas

Location New York, NY
Size 45,200 SF
Year 2023

After establishing a strong working relationship with Turner Construction during a project at 675 Fifth Avenue, TPG was re-engaged by the client as Architect of Record for a large plaza renovation at 1221 Avenue of the Americas. The initial scope of work expanded to include the enlargement of the retail area on the lower level and the demolition of a substantial 80x100-foot covered exterior space. TPG worked closely with project engineers and consultants to redefine the plaza and create an inclusive and welcoming area that resonates with the city's vibrant atmosphere and rich history.

The original layout included elevated sections on the north and south sides, forming a multi-level structure with planters and sunken spaces in the center. To accommodate the sloping street, we implemented steel framing on the north side and a concrete slab to the south. The project required diligent coordination with project partners to integrate an MTA entrance and concrete bleachers. The length and number of benches align with the requirement for a specific number of trees, highlighting the attention to detail that defined the entire project. With its newly accessible layout, the renovated plaza can now attract new retail tenants, creating a unique shopping experience in the heart of the city.

The successful completion of this project highlights our ability to create visually stunning and efficient spaces, pushing the boundaries of architectural excellence. The plaza is a testament to our commitment to innovation in shaping communities and the built environment.
