Mutual of America provides retirement and investment services while securing the financial futures of millions. Their recent shift toward hybrid work prompted a complete reimagining of their workspace. TPG Architecture assessed the existing footprint, identifying opportunities to redesign the office across three floors and refresh its historic material palette while honoring the brand’s traditions.
The reception opens to a lounge framed by blush banquette seating and small conference rooms. Overhead, acoustic felt tiles are integrated into a coffered ceiling for visual texture and sound control. TPG reorganized departments to create a vibrant mix of meeting rooms, lounges, phone rooms, and pantries arranged into departmental “neighborhoods” that maximize daylight access. Amenities such as a game room and a tech bar add to the employee-focused environment. A new three-story interconnecting stair links these amenity hubs, making executives on the sixth floor more accessible and promoting casual interactions.
Throughout the stacked floors, touchdown stations, collaboration zones, and client meeting areas wrap around the stair landings. Open display shelves provide unique employee storage, reinforcing the firm’s hospitality-driven vision. This same emphasis on hospitality informed layered finishes and inviting spaces designed to help recruit and retain talent. The IT room, fully visible to visitors, serves as a bold nod to the company’s tech-forward operations. Traditional materials like wood and stone are reinterpreted with contemporary detailing, complemented by stylish lighting fixtures that add both drama and functionality.
