Enhancing the customer experience through retail design

TPG has worked with the footwear manufacturer Nike on several retail locations in the United States. Our relationship began in 2013 with the design of a new running store located on the corner of Third Ave and 67th Street on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. This 13,500 square-foot project utilized a category-specific format with an emphasis on the neighborhood. The Nike Running Store represented the new platform for Nike to engage with their consumer. Technology, education, and community participation drove the store layout and merchandising; and the project features the latest in Nike’s technologically advanced footwear and apparel. Signature brand materials are implemented to evoke the spirit of sport. Reclaimed bleacher boards and gymnasium flooring add warmth to the space in contrast to the exposed concrete building structure and contributed to the project’s LEED Gold certification.

In 2016, TPG was the architect for Nike’s new five-story, 55,000-square-foot multi-sport retail flagship at the corner of Broadway and Spring Street in New York’s Soho neighborhood. The new building is located within a historic district, and its design had been previously approved by the Landmarks Commission for commercial use with retail at ground floor level only. Alongside a conversion to a single-tenant retail use throughout the building, our design team created a six-story central atrium and a double-height space on the 5th floor, which imparts a sense of openness and connectivity while also mitigating the restrictive ceiling heights inherent in the building’s design. The project merges Nike’s digital and physical platforms within the brick-and-mortar environment and features many of Nike’s newest personalized services, including trial zones for basketball, running, and soccer, as well as product customization services. The store also features a guest lounge and concierge services, enhancing the overall customer experience.

Our firm also worked with Nike on the interior fit-out of a two-story, 31,000-square-foot, multi-sport retail location in one of Miami Beach’s most popular shopping destinations. Located within a historic district, we coordinated closely with both the local core-and-shell architect and the Nike team to create a flagship store that reinforces the Nike brand while contributing to the historical context of the surrounding neighborhood. The 2017 project integrates the digital requirements needed for Nike’s new cutting-edge retail environment. The store features trial zones for basketball, running, and soccer, as well as a customer lounge and concierge shopping services. The store also incorporates original artworks, including a unique piece by Miami-based Jessy Nite on the first floor. The south and west parts of the building are wrapped in a concrete brise-soleil, cast with waffle iron and Nike Windrunner patterns, as a nod to classic Nike footwear and apparel.
